Hiring Process


Recruitment opens June 2nd, 2008

All hiring is done from an established eligibility list.  The following steps must be completed to be placed on the eligibility list:

  •     Complete and return application during the recruitment period

  •     Successfully complete the written exam

  •     Provide certification of a net typing speed of at least 35 words per minute

Once an eligibility list has been established, qualified candidates are asked to come for Phase II testing.  Phase II testing includes:

  •     CritiCall Exam - Tests listening skills, dexterity skills and following directions

  •     Spanish speaking skills (if applicable)

  •     Oral Interview

Candidates that pass all of the hiring process will be placed on the hiring list for Fire Emergency Dispatcher.  Vacancies are expected for the entire life of the list.

  • Applications and study guides may only be obtained during the recruitment period beginning June 2nd, 2008 and ending June 13th, 2008
  • The recruitment period typically opens once per year

Position Requirements


  • Work Irregular Hours, weekends, evenings, nights and holidays
  • Standard shifts - 7am-3pm, 3pm-11pm and 11pm-7am.
  • Shift schedules are based on both 8hour and 10 hour shifts for a total of 40 hours per week for Full Time employment.
  • Attend a minimum of 12 weeks of Fire Emergency Dispatcher training (40 hours per week)
  • Successfully complete the training program (911 phone and Radio Operator)
  • Complete and maintain Phoenix Fire Department Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) Certification

Required Skills


  • Type 35 worlds per minute
  • 1 year experience in public contact or customer service work, including general typing

Desirable Education or Skills


  • Emergency Medical Dispatcher Certification (EMD)
  • Emergency Medical Technician Certification (EMT)
  • Fluent in Spanish language

EMD and EMT courses are available at your local community colleges.


Compensation


$18.01-$26.44 hourly (yearly merit increases)

$37,461-54,995 annualized

Full-time, Part-time and Job-share positions available


Job Duties


  • Operate Fire Computer Aided Dispatch and other computerized communication equipment

  • Accurately receive and transmit information of an emergency nature for the community

  • Evaluate calls and determine the appropriate level of Fire and/or EMS assistance needed

  • Dispatch Fire and/or EMS units

  • Support field personnel

  • Give First Aid and pre-arrival medical instructions as needed

  • Multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, highly intensive environment

  • Demonstrate extensive communication skills

Job-share employee's benefits are pro-rated.  Part-time employees do not receive the above city benefits.
